About Nathan Burggraff

Nathan began taking piano lessons at age eight.  During his years at Calvary Baptist School in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, he studied piano under Lori Kach, Brian McCrorie, and Elaine Harbin.  After graduating from Calvary, Nathan began to pursue a music degree in piano at Clearwater Christian College, which he studied under Craig Ralston.  Nathan later added music composition, also studied under Craig Ralston, as a second major during his sophomore year at college.  In 2005, he graduated from Clearwater Christian College with a music degree, majoring in Piano Performance and Music Composition.

While at CCC, Nathan had numerous opportunities to accompany for voice and instrumental lessons as well as student recitals.  It was at that time that he became interested in pursuing a graduate degree in piano accompanying.  Nathan was accepted into the Piano Accompanying programs of both The Eastman School of Music (Univ. of Rochester) and Peabody Conservatory of Music (Johns Hopkins Univ.), but he decided on Eastman for the opportunity to study under Dr. Jean Barr, a pioneer and expert in the field of piano accompanying.  Nathan has completed two masters degrees at Eastman, including a Master of Music in Piano Accompanying (2007) and a Master of Arts in Music Theory Pedagogy (2010) and is currently working on his Ph.D. in Music Theory at Eastman.

Along with his pursuit of musical training, Nathan is also currently working on a Master of Arts in Theological Studies at Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary.  His goal is to use both his musical and theological training to teach music, compose music, and write on the topic of music from a theologian’s perspective.  He also plans to use his accompanying training to work as a professional accompanist.  “I see a real need for solid Christian musicians in the professional world of music, but I also see a need for strong theological perspectives on music in the Christian community.  Lord willing, I would like to contribute to both areas.”  His contribution to the Christian community has included presenting sacred piano concerts in churches around the United States and Canada over the past four summers, as well as participating in and leading musical missions trips to Peru (2006) and South Africa (2008, 2009).
